On this page, I would like to promote the animal behaviorists and trainers , who I find to be not only incredibly knowledgeable, but also a true inspiration in their work. Besides these individuals, you will also find links to local dog activity groups as well as national organizations, which might be helpful for you in your search for further knowledge and education.
Animal Behaviorists and Trainers
Dr. Ian Dunbar, veterinarian, animal behaviorist and dog trainer. Not only is Dr. Dunbar's knowledge quite impressive, but he is also an absolutely hilarious speaker with his great sense of British humor. He has for decades traveled the world promoting dog friendly training methods and was the first in the world to teach an off-leash puppy socialization and training class back in 1982. Dr. Dunbar has been the author of numerous books and DVD's as well as the founder of Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT).

Dr. Roger Abrantes, PhD in Evolutionary Biology and Ethology, and a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy. Dr. Abrantes speaks seven languages, has written 17 books on animal behavior and is the divisional director at the Ethology Institute Cambridge where he holds regular lectures. Again I can only encourage you to read anything written by Dr. Abrantes. His knowledge and involvement in studies regarding animal behaviors are impressive. From him I learned about the rats they trained in Angola to detect landmines. Yep, Rats! What a great way to utilize an animal, which is native to land and accustomed to the environment.
Suzanne Clothier has been working with animals professionally since 1977, with a deep background of experience that includes obedience, agility, puppy testing, breeding, Search and Rescue, conformation, instructing, kennel management and canine midwifery. She is well respected for her holistic Relationship Centered Training™ approach to dogs and the people that love them. While studying to become a dog trainer,I read Suzanne's book "Bones would rain from the sky", which became quite a turning point for me in regards to my perception of dogs and my relationship with them. Her book made me want to do become a responsible handler and leader. had the chance to meet Suzanne Clothier in Bozeman in 2014 at a dog training seminar and I have to say, not only is she very impressive in her knowledge, but she also has an amazing sense of humor. With all the different training methods being discussed, with all the talk about neuroscience, behavioral science and anatomy , one thing she said , stood out for me: No matter what training you do, your dog can not learn unless it feels safe! Powerful statement which I think should be the very core of any training philosophy.
